Developer: Dr. Gavin Hough
BSc(Hon) Theoretical Physics at University of Cape Town, South Africa 1985 and PhD Space Physics from University of Natal, South Africa 1995. Managing Director of EnviroVision Solutions PTY Ltd (ForestWatch) since November 2002.
Gavin’s interest and expertise in visual detection systems stems from the many years spent observing the aurora australis (southern lights) in the Antarctic while completing his PhD in Space Physics for the University of Natal. Gavin devised a method of detecting the aurora using computer image processing software and automated cameras. Not everyone would make the conceptual leap from the study of the Southern Lights to wildfire detection, but Gavin noticed that the motion patterns of auroras were similar in nature to wildfire smoke motion signatures. He adapted the motion detecting software he designed and developed for recording events in the Antarctic and went on to develop today\'s ForestWatch® system. Both Gavin and his ForestWatch® software have received numerous awards, including KZN IT Person of the Year, IT Product of the year and the Foundation for Research Development National IDEA award.
